Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Sales Tax Audit?

A sales and use tax audit, is a compliance audit performed to ensure you are complying with state tax laws. An auditor reviews your business records over a period of time, which can be weeks, months or even years, to determine whether you are collecting and reporting sales and use taxes that are legally due.

Do I believe what the audit says I owe?

Not all audit assessments are legally due.  There may be ways to remedy the assessment or auditor errors that can be contested. The problem areas tend to be the Gross Sales and Sales Tax Reconciliation and errors in taxability decisions.  Software, data processing and information services are contracts that should be reviewed by a sales tax professional, to determine if the auditor made the correct taxability determination.  These are the areas we see the most auditor errors.

How long is an Audit period?

The Statute of Limitations in Texas is four years. That means that your audit period will most likely look back four years.
